We’ve already noted the importance for cost management of knowing if you’re wasting water, but what does this actually mean?
We can probably all conjour-up images of a dripping tap, or a ruptured pipe, but how else could your business be haemorrhaging water in less obvious ways?
Underground leakage can be the biggest source of wasted water. An underground leak is nearly always invisible and usually requires a specialist to locate. Sometimes water can be leaking for years without being detected, and for every litre lost your water supplier(s) would still levy the cost of supply and disposal. Once detected and located there will be an inevitable cost of repair (which varies) but the cost of the lost water can run into thousands of pounds each year.
Poorly maintained or faulty equipment can also result in significant wastage. Water softeners, urinal controls, drinking fountains, irrigation systems and standpipes are some common culprits and excessive water pressure can exacerbate the effect.
Extravagant practice by staff or contractors can too result in unnecessary waste. Defrosting meat in the kitchen under a running tap, hosepipes left running whilst irrigating garden areas, and multiple WC flushes when servicing washrooms are three possible scenarios.
Running a project in your business to critically assess and reduce metered consumption could result in an increasingly valuable boost to your bottom line as tariffs increase each April.
